5 Ways to Support Neurodivergent Employees on Your Remote Team

If your company has recently shifted to a remote work model, naturally you want to make every effort to ensure that your team can succeed in this new environment. Sometimes, neurodivergent employees, in particular, can struggle with remote work, or simply have trouble adjusting to major process changes in a short period of time. That’s why Visual Contenting offers the following tips to help your whole team reach its full potential.

Ask Your Team What They Need

You may not know for certain which of your employees have disabilities unless they’ve chosen to disclose this information to you or ask for specific accommodations. But if you want to better serve a neurodivergent team, take the time to individually ask each team member what you can do to best support them.

For example, if you want feedback from your employees, Proservice recommends asking how communication could be improved, or what you could do to make them feel more valued at work. If you’re bringing new team members on to your team, you can ask these questions during their onboarding period so that your new hires can get off to a strong start.

Provide Consistent Feedback

In addition to asking employees for feedback on your own processes and performance, you should also give them frequent feedback so that they know which areas to work on and where they are strongest. Giving great feedback takes practice! FlashPoint recommends focusing on providing both positive feedback and constructive criticism and emphasizing long-term discussions around their performance rather than honing in on short-term feedback.

Accommodate Flexible Scheduling

By giving your employees the chance to create their own schedules, they’ll be able to work during times when they feel most productive. If these hours are outside of typical business hours, it’s perfectly fine, as long as they turn in projects by their deadlines.

While flexible scheduling can be a boon for your employees, you also want to provide your team with a clear sense of structure when it comes to project timelines, expectations, and deadlines for deliverables. Make sure to clarify which tasks should be completed by certain dates, and be ready to answer your employees’ questions promptly.

Streamline, Streamline, Streamline

Believe it or not, another great way to help your team members succeed is by helping the customers they serve. That’s because streamlining workflow as much as possible also reduces problems and conflicts, not to mention stress, allowing you to further maximize efficiency. So do your employees – and your customers – a huge favor by integrating API products that can verify identities, access transaction histories, and check balances in a manner that’s as safe as it is fast. Additionally, keep your ear to the ground, always trying to keep updated on additional security concerns or technological innovations that can benefit everyone.

Host One-On-One Check-ins

In the midst of big projects, you probably host video conferences to share progress updates and get everyone on the same page. But for neurodivergent employees, large video conferences with lots of people can be overwhelming. When possible, try to check in with employees one-on-one for status updates. This can make it easier for your employees to communicate clearly. And when it comes to communication, you should also ensure that your internal communication tools are easy for everyone to access and use.

When you’re managing a neurodiverse team, you want to ensure that everyone feels heard and respected, and they have the opportunity to succeed. If your management style doesn’t emphasize inclusion, you may never realize some of your employees’ strengths. However, with these tips, you’ll be able to bring out the best in your team!
