Snapchat is a video and photo-sharing app for mobile devices that was launched in September 2011 by Bobby Murphy, Evan Spiegel and Reggie Brown.
The initial idea of the app was to share impermanent pictures using "snaps" or private message, which can be viewed for a specific period set by the user before not being accessible anymore. Although the app initially focused on photos, video in Snapchat has become an increasingly important element.
Snaps are semi-public stories shared to the contact list of the user or sent privately. The most popular features of Snapchat worldwide are sending photo and message snaps.
In Q3 of 2018, the number of active daily users reached 186 million, making it one of the quickest growing social media apps and networks in the world.
The demographics consist mostly of young people with 71% of users under the age of 34. Snapchat has been adopted by brands with strong visual impact in the fashion, beauty and sports sectors.
Around 18% of Snapchat users access the app at least once daily and in the U.S. the app is more popular than Twitter and Tumblr in terms of user engagement.
Advertising and branded content are the major sources of the app's revenue. Snapchat is anticipated to generate $US 1,470 million in 2018 worldwide.
