But, is everything truly milk and honey in the land of graphic design? Well, it really depends on your expectations. Let’s take a look then at some of the benefits and pitfalls of being a freelance designer to see how well do you fit into the whole story.
Benefit: The opportunity to unleash creativity
If there is one thing we can say with absolute certainty is that graphic design is an industry that's built entirely on individual creativity. Sure, the bulk of the work is mostly based on design rules and what we like to call "good practices." But, moving on to higher-paid projects is virtually impossible without a certain dose of imagination. If you consider yourself a talented and creative individual, this is the industry where your efforts will probably be the best rewarded.

So, we have established pretty clearly by now that graphic design is an industry rooted in creativity. You need to be aware, though, that this creativity is subjected to a very clear, and utilitarian commercial purpose that doesn't necessarily go hand in hand with the spirit of artistry. But, starting out in such an environment can be needlessly hard and frustrating.

To what extent you will be able to use them will largely depend on how capable of managing some less flattering aspects of this industry you are.
